ONE of the region's oldest and best-loved businesses yesterday announced it is to close both its stores.

The directors of Dressers (Stationers) Ltd revealed that they have accepted a conditional offer from a property developer for the company.

It means that Dressers stores in Darlington and Northallerton will shut by March 31.

The 66 staff members who work at both stores are being given individual interviews and advised of their redundancy position.

Dressers, which sells books, maps, stationery, gifts and toys, has been in Darlington for more than 150 years and Northallerton since the early 1970s.

The directors say they have taken the decision to sell because it has become "increasingly difficult" to maintain its style of high street retailing.

Company chairman Ken Dore said: "I take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their support.

"The company will naturally commence a closing down sale, but please be assured the closure programme will be conducted in an orderly fashion - the Dressers way."

The company is to be sold to developers Terrace Hill, which is also involved in the proposed development of the Feethams site in Darlington.

A refurbishment of both stores will begin immediately for as yet unnamed retailers.

Robert Cansick, from Terrace Hill, said: "Terrace Hill are very excited by the purchase of these two prime retail properties. A number of national multiple retailers have shown great interest.

"While it is always sad to lose a distinguished name from any high street, the purchase of the shops represents a tremendous opportunity for jobs."
