A NORTH-EAST woman who rediscovered her favourite sport after a heart transplant is preparing to represent her country.

Joan Whitney, 61, of Montague's Harrier, Guisborough, was a badminton player for many years before a heart attack in 1996.

Although she initially made a reasonable recovery, her health declined and she was sent to the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, for tests. In January 1997, she had a heart transplant.

Following the operation, her family suggested she resume her favourite sport, but the grandmother-of-five says it took her more than a year to pick up her racquet again.

Now she has been chosen to represent Great Britain in the World Transplant Games, in Kobe, Japan, in August 2001.

However, Mrs Whitney needs sponsors. If anyone wants to help, contact (01642) 480397.
