MIDDLESBROUGH goalkeeper Marlon Beresford last night admitted his future is likely to be away from the Riverside.

The former Burnley keeper has moved to Sheffield Wednesday on loan and is desperate to get his career back on track - by impressing Owls manager Paul Jewell.

The 31-year-old took his bow for the Hillsborough side in the 2-0 reverse at Blackburn on Saturday, nine years after he left the club after serving a traineeship.

The Lincoln-born stopper racked up almost 300 appearances for Burnley before switching to Boro in 1998. But the deal turned sour as he pulled on the Boro jersey just a dozen times in 22 months at the Riverside - prompting the return to his roots.

He said: ''I jumped at the chance to join Wednesday, and while I'm here I aim to make the most of it.

''My chances have been few and far between at Middlesbrough in the last couple of years so it's possibly time to look elsewhere.''

Beresford moved last Friday and has until February 12th to persuade Jewell to offer him a longer contract.

With Kevin Pressman out of action with his thigh injury for another fortnight, Beresford has a golden chance to stake his claim between the posts.

He added: ''I would consider moving anywhere that's going to give me first-team football. Obviously, it always helps if you're familiar with the area and familiar with the place - and that certainly applies to Wednesday.''
