PUBS and clubs across North Yorkshire could put their licences in jeopardy unless they ensure door staff have the appropriate qualification.

The days of "hired heavies" have been numbered in the county since the police-promoted Door Safe Register scheme was started in York some years ago.

The city was the first to ensure a professional approach, arranging classes in conflict management, law, first aid, drug awareness, licensing issues, fire safety and bomb awareness.

Harrogate followed suit, with door staff there even equipped with radios to warn each other of troublemakers. They are also linked to both police and CCTV control rooms.

However, from next month, it will no longer be a matter of choice.

The rest of the county is expected to follow suit and establishments using bouncers who have not attended the course, or passed an exam, risk losing their licences.

Even organisers of events in village halls will be covered by the same regulations if they intend to employ door staff.

A course was cancelled in the Richmond area this month due to lack of interest, prompting Sgt Andrew Nursey to warn the district's pubs and clubs of the imminent changes.

But he said: "It also offers an opportunity to anyone looking for work. If they came on the course and complete it successfully, they would have a qualification valid anywhere in the county.

"But everyone benefits in the end as it means licensed premises will be safer, customers get a better quality of service and there should be fewer incidents involving the police.''

A successful Door Safe student and a supporter of the project is Melva Steckles, who owns two bars in Catterick Garrison and the Staxx nightclub in nearby Colburn.

Last night, she said: "It's worthwhile and reflects the way the whole industry wants to go - replacing aggression with a meet-and-greet culture. It's not a national scheme yet, but I believe the Government is looking at it as a possibility; the sooner the better."
