A MAN whose exploits have included walking unaided to the North Pole and rowing across the Atlantic, yesterday placed the spotlight on the importance of safety.

Adventurer and sportsman Jock Wishart spoke out at the presentation of European health and safety awards to 18 organisations from the North-East.

Speaking at the event organised by the Health and Safety Executive, at St James' Park, in Newcastle, he said: "Nobody knows what is around the next corner and that is why it is vital to plan ahead for all sorts of contingencies.

"People need to be well-trained, motivated and vigilant in order not to be more prone to serious risks and accidents.

"Although I have embarked on various adventures, I have done so having specially prepared down to the last details - it has helped bring me back safely."

This year's awards are in recognition of the efforts shown by organisations to improve and promote health and safety.

Winner included Bishop Auckland College; Cummins Engines, of Darlington; Durham (Boldon) Land Registry; Fens Primary School, Hartepool; Fine Organics, Seal Sands, Teesside; Hydram Engineering, Chilton; Marks and Spencer, Darlington; Oaklee Nursing Home, Middlesbrough; Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council; Royal Country Hotel, Durham; Stockton and Billingham College and Teesside Safety Group
