YOUNGSTERS finally returned to their own school building yesterday - four months after floodwaters invaded their classrooms.

The primary school at Brompton, in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, fell victim to the floods early last November, when much of the interior was left under 2ft of water.

Since then, the school's 180 pupils have been taking their lessons at a variety of sites - including the local rugby club, Methodist church and village hall.

Following the completion of a £100,000 refurbishment project they are now back in their new-look classrooms.

The school had to undergo a total refurbishment and has been re-equipped and re-furnished.

A new floor had to be laid for the school hall, at a cost of £15,000.

Headteacher Richard Hancock said yesterday: "It is a superb job.

"It is almost like coming to a new school and the youngsters are very impressed.

"Since November it has been as if time was standing still, with the pupils taking their classes at seven different venues.

"But although we have had to suffer in the short-term, something good has definitely come out of something bad," he said.
