WASHINGTON teenager Craig Glanville maintained his superb winter form by winning the Northern Under-15 Pentathlon Championship at Gateshead Stadium.

The 14-year-old North-East indoor 60m and 60m hurdles record holder won four of his five disciplines, coming second in the high jump, and maintained his unbeaten run in track events.

Glanville, who set a record winning the Inter Counties 400m Under-15 title and took the bronze medal in the English Schools Championships, was again in top form indoors following up on his recent AAA 400m indoor triumph.

The Gateshead Harrier, who also holds the regional long jump and shot putt titles, was an undisputed winner of the Northern Pentathlon title, finishing nearly 300 points clear, with clubmate Lewis Robson taking the bronze medal.

The North-East's recently appointed Athletics Development Officer, Richard Hunter, who helped organise the Pentathlon Championships, won the Northern senior men's championship with 3,118 points, though he was beaten in four of the five disciplines by guest competitor, Harrow's Andy Lewis.

Jarrow and Hebburn provided two North-East champions, David Robertson, who also won the Northern Under-17 title, and Sara Todd, who was beaten in the Northern event by Liverpool veteran Wendy Laing, who proved too strong in the field events.

Elswick's world double decathlon champion and Scottish international Jacqui Elliott, whose strongest outdoor events are 200m upwards, found the confines of the sprint events against her and had to be content with fourth place.

Mandale's Penny Boyd was second in the Northern U-17 Women's Championship, but took the North-East title, with South Shields' Emma Morris runner-up. Another North-East winner was Morpeth's Carla Taylor, who took bronze in the Northern Championship.
