AN INDUSTRIAL eyesore is to be transformed and given a new lease of life.

Former rail marshalling yards on the edge of Middlesbrough are to be given a green makeover with hundreds of trees planted, a footpath network, and viewing platforms across the River Tees.

Designated a nature reserve, the Maze Park is to receive an £8,000 facelift as part of a New Deal for Communities (NDC) plan. A 14-hectare area will be planted with 400 willow and alder saplings, as well as an improved access.

Jackie Heeney, NDC programme director for west Middlesbrough, said the scheme would be of benefit to schools and the local community.

Bill Ashton-Wickett, nature reserves project officer for the Tees Valley Wildlife Trist, said: "The money from the NDC partnership will help us create a much better environment at Maze Park.

"We're planting hundreds of trees, providing more footpaths and creating new viewing platforms so people can get closer to the wealth of wildlife that Middlesbrough has to offer.
