YOUNGSTERS who were handed the task of designing their own play area, were the first to try it out yesterday.
The school council at the Michael Syddall Primary School, in Catterick, was invited to help spend a £10,000 grant from environmental group Yorventure.
Catterick Parish Council was given the money and, after consultation with the school, chose an adventure-packed climbing frame.
Parish councillor, Noel Heaton, said there were further plans to revamp the whole play area and add swings and a roundabout.
He said: "Needless to say the children picked the biggest and most expensive option first, but once we explained the financial limits they were happy to choose a model that suited them and had the right price tag.
"The play areas are well used by the schoolchildren, as well as other youngsters in Catterick - we are grateful that Yorventure helped us to complete this next phase."
