A POLICEMAN suffered slight burns yesterday after dashing into a blazing flat to try to rescue two children, who eventually managed to get out by themselves.

PC Mark Nicklin was on patrol with Paul Godfrey, 32, in Sunderland Road, Gateshead, at 8.20am yesterday when he was flagged down by a woman.

She told him two of her children were trapped inside the flat and he tried to get in, but was beaten back.

He then tried to get into the back of the house, when the children, aged 14 and five, got out by themselves.

PC Nicklin said: "The thought of having to come out of the flat knowing I was leaving the children in there was horrendous."
