THE stories of 18 remarkable men who served their country with honour are included in a book launched this week.

Major Roger Chapman has spent the past eight months embroiled in meticulous research - and the result is the first comprehensive guide to the deeds of Green Howards awarded the Victoria Cross.

It has been a tight schedule as the project had to be ready in time for this weekend.

On Friday, five families will meet at the regimental museum in Richmond, North Yorkshire, for a reception for relatives of the unit's VC recipients.

Among the guests will be the Army's last-serving Field Marshal, Lord Inge, and former Home Secretary, Lord Britton.

The Green Howards Regimental Museum launches an exhibition which brings all 18 medals together in the same place for the very first time next week.

"It has been hard work and has involved a lot of assistance from other sources but everything is now complete," said Mr Chapman yesterday.

Beyond Their Duty, which is available from tomorrow, at £7.50, has already been recommended by other writers of military history, including Gerald Giddon, author of seven volumes on other VC winners of the First World War.

The exhibition of all the Green Howards' 18 VCs opens at the museum, in Richmond Market Place, next Monday.
