A LOCAL cricketer will bat for Britain this summer as part of a police forces tournament.

Sergeant Graham Shaw, who is based in Middlesbrough, will captain the British police team in a series of matches with top players from the Army, Navy, Royal Air Force, and local clubs in the London area.

After travelling to the capital for the five-game event in July, the 39-year-old will play in a series of one-day matches before he heads back to Teesside to play for his home team in Guisborough.

He said: "We have picked a squad of 19 from which we will take 15 on tour. This is the only time of the year we play together, and we have done quite well in the past, winning more than we have lost."

On his return, Sgt Shaw and his Guisborough team-mates will coach pupils at Laurence Jackson school, which hopes to be awarded specialist status for sport.
