A STORE turned coat hangers into cash for the mayor of Durham's charity appeal.
Marks and Spencer's Durham City store raised £722 for the appeal fund, Chase the Butterfly, by recycling in-store coat hangers.
Each year the mayor chooses a fundraising cause, and this year Councillor George Wharton created Chase the Butterfly to support local community and environmental initiatives.
He said: "I've had a tremendous year as mayor of Durham, but undoubtedly the most satisfying part is knowing we've been able to raise thousands of pounds to help local people.
"I'm constantly impressed at how imaginative people are in thinking up fundraising schemes, and Marks and Spencer takes the biscuit. Getting cash for coat hangers is a first."
Shop staff support a different charity each year, and in the past have donated money to schools and local groups.
Sales advisor Susan Robinson said: "The hangers which aren't accepted by customers are sent for recycling. The firm we use has given us the cheque."
