THE death of an elderly woman is being investigated after her body was found in her home with the front window smashed.

The body of 79-year-old Linda Allen was discovered yesterday, at her home in Wheler Street, Houghton-le-Spring.

Police had been alerted after an early-hours call from a phone box half-a-mile away, at the junction of Queensway and Hall Lane. Detectives have yet to reveal the cause of death, but it is not thought to be suspicious.

Neighbours say the street has often been targeted by burglars.

Police ruled out foul play after a post-mortem examination yesterday afternoon, but say they are keen to speak to the man who made the phone call at just before 2.45am.

They initially launched a murder-style inquiry, and sent in forensic experts to comb the house for clues as to how she died.

Detectives carried out house-to-house inquiries, and interviewed shop staff in nearby Newbottle Street.

Yesterday morning, traffic was diverted away from Wheler Street, and both ends of the short road were cordoned off.

Neighbours said Ms Allen used to work as a hairdresser in the town, and was known locally as Betty Davis, because of her likeness to the Hollywood film star.

Samuel Corney, who lives in Wheler Street, said: "She has lived alone there since her sister died at least ten years ago.

"She used to be a hairdresser, but as she was in her 70s, she only took in the odd regular at home.

"I have no idea what happened, but there have been several burglaries here. I've been burgled three times myself."

The kiosk used to make the phone call was also cordoned off so forensics could look for clues. Anyone with information is asked to call 0191-454 7555.
