A CHARTER has been launched to help people who are considering adoption.
Sunderland City Council wants to make it easier for people to understand the complex regulations governing adoption.
Barbara Williams, assistant director of Sunderland Social Services, said: "We have set out clearly in this charter what adopters can expect at each stage of the process.
"It is hoped this will counter some of the myths and misinformation that might put off families."
The charter aims to minimise waiting time, offer preparation courses every two months, and provide a comprehensive after-adoption service.
It was launched yesterday, at the Leechmere Training Centre, Sunderland, to coincide with a campaign to recruit more adopters.
Of the 40 Sunderland children who need adoptive families, most are of school age.
