CAMPAIGNERS fighting the demolition of a pub hope that putting it on a register might save it.

Last month, Whitbread launched an appeal after Middlesbrough Borough Council banned it from demolishing The Ladle, at Marton, Middlesbrough.

The company had wanted to replace it with a modern pub, hotel and drive-through restaurant, but councillors agreed the 1860s building should remain.

Now the fate of the pub, built as Brackenhoe Hall by Middlesbrough's first mayor, Henry Bolckow, will be decided by a planning inspector.

In an effort to sway it in their favour, local residents are calling for Middlesbrough council to draw up a list of buildings that should be preserved.

Ian Graham, chairman of the Marton Avenue Residents' Association, said: "In the past, councillors have suggested it would be a good idea for Middlesbrough to have its own register of historic buildings. Now we will be approaching the council about it again."

Anyone wishing to write to the inspectorate should send three copies of their letter to Room 1003, Tollgate House, Houlton Street, Bristol, BS2 DJ, ref: APP/WO734/A/01/1061097.
