VILLAGERS are celebrating a £192,000 National Lottery grant which will help them turn an empty pub into a community centre.

The money from the Lottery's new community fund is going to the Dene Valley Partnership, which is trying to regenerate a group of former pit villages near Bishop Auckland.

The partnership wants to convert the old Top House pub, in Eldon Lane, into a community centre.

Chairman Margaret Ingledew said the present community house was not big enough.

She said: "We are hoping to set up computer training with Bishop Auckland College on top of the things we already do.

"We cater for all ages including young people who have their own drop-in club."
