THE majority of people in Middlesbrough are generally satisfied with the town's leisure and sports facilities, although many do not make use of them, according to a report.

The findings are revealed in a survey conducted by Middlesbrough Borough Council, in which a citizen's panel was asked its views on sports facilities, town planning, cemeteries, environmental issues, how regeneration money should be spent, and budget priorities.

Comprising of 1,231 residents, the panel includes representatives from all age groups and walks of life.

Of the participants, only 33 per cent said they used sports facilities in Middlesbrough regularly, with 22 per cent travelling elsewhere for sports at least once a week.

On average, users were satisfied with the leisure and cultural activities provided in the town, with The Rainbow Centre named as the favourite council venue.

Those who do not use sports or leisure services most often gave the reason that they were not interested. When asked to comment on cultural activities, most people cited their biggest criticism as a lack of programme information.

A concert venue was most often stated as the most lacking facility in Middlesbrough.

Town planning received praise, as did cemeteries. People gave measures to reduce drug use as their main priority for neighbourhood renewal, and said more money should be spent on facilities for youngsters and road maintenance.
