Q I am under 60, living on Incapacity Benefit of £84.04. I have applied for a one bedroomed council flat. How much rent and Council Tax could I expect to pay after rebates?

A Weekly, about £5.50 basic rent and £1.68 Council Tax.

Q I live with my sister and brother- in-law but am considering applying for a disabled person's bungalow. I am 52 and on low rate Disability Living Allowance, with £75.65 Income Support. What help could I expect with my rent?

A Being on Income Support means you would get maximum rebates but this does not necessarily mean all the rent will be covered. You will have to pay for any water or heating included and the council might restrict the help they give if they think the rent is excessive. Find out what you will have to pay by getting a pre-tenancy determination from the council before you sign the tenancy agreement.

QPre-April, our weekly income consists of Incapacity Benefit £67.50, private pensions of £43 and £23.50 and my wife's basic pension of £44.51. Our savings are £12,000 and our Council Tax £95 a month. What help can we get?

A Pre April you were due a Council Tax Rebate of £2 a week. From April your new rebate should reduce the annual bill to about £700.

QWill a personal pension of £59.95 a week affect my Incapacity Benefit?

A No, but people now making new claims for Incapacity Benefit will get a reduction if their personal pension is more than £85 a week.

Q I am 51 and we live on my Incapacity Benefit of £67.50 and my wife's wages of £90 a week. My son lives with us but he is on a low wage and pays nothing to the house. Can I get help with rent and Council Tax?

A It depends how low your son's wages are. It is what he earns, not what he pays that counts. For example, if his gross pay is £118 a week, you should be paying no more than £35 basic rent and £8 Council Tax per week.
