A CONTROVERSIAL plan to develop a Guisborough farm could win the backing of the borough council despite objections from local residents.

On Monday, North York Moors National Park's planning committee is to discuss an application to change farm buildings at Home Farm, Hutton, Guisborough, into four homes with office and studio space.

The farmhouse is a grade two listed building, but many of the outbuildings are in need of repair.

Neighbours say the proposal will harm the appearance of the area, lead to an increase in traffic, and threaten the area's heritage.

Members of the town council are siding with the residents.

Councillor Peter Spencer said he was concerned about the unsightly appearance of the proposed buildings, and inadequate parking.

But in a report to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's planning committee, Dr Joan Rees, director of the economy and the environment, is recommending that the council tells the national park authority it has no objections.

She said there was a demand for business premises, and the alterations were sympathetic.

The council's planning committee will discuss the proposal on Thursday.
