A NORTH-East council has been given a £6.8m impetus to deliver improvements in services.

Newcastle City Council yesterday pledged to carry out an array of improvements, with the promise of extra cash from the government if it meets its targets over the next three years.

The council has signed a Local Public Service Agreement, which requires it to set targets in a range of services.

As part of its agreement, the council is setting out to improve literacy and numeracy among 14-year-olds and reduce school truancies.

It also plans to reduce the number of fatalities on the city's roads and increase employment rates in disadvantaged groups.
