A NORTH-East defence manufacturer has won a national award for its innovative business methods.

Newcastle-based Vickers Defence Systems (VDS) was one of six projects to win one of the MoD's new Smart Acquisition Awards.

The awards, which were set up this year, recognise companies finding innovative ways of speeding up the traditional procurement and contract process and making it more efficient.

Vickers received the accolade for its work on the Trojan and Titan engineer tank system (ETS) contract.

The £250m contract was announced in March.

Vickers' methods ensured programme approval was achieved six months early and the final contract was achieved a year ahead of schedule.

The company attributed its success to the early engagement of all the project's stakeholders.
