A £5M BOOST has been announced for the UK's only potash mine.

The money has been invested in a new compaction plant at Cleveland Potash, Boulby, east Cleveland.

This will result in an increase by more than 50 percent in the annual production of high grade granular potash to 670,000 tonnes. The vote of confidence in the 30-year-old mine will enable the company to seek out new export markets, such as the Americas, that could not be supplied before.

Personnel manager Chris Gibson said: "We can sell more production at higher prices, resulting in higher returns. Higher sales revenues from selling higher quality products. It will hopefully maintain profitability and secure employment in the long term.''

The plant came on stream at the beginning of this year and is now in full production
