A GIANT Scalextric circuit is to be erected in Darlington town centre as part of a summer entertainment programme.

The event, on the May 28 Bank Holiday, will involve a mini replica of a Grand Prix circuit being installed in High Row.

Measuring 19ft by 9ft, the circuit will be overseen by trained staff, wearing pit stop overalls, who will supervise races between individuals, or against the clock.

The following week, on Saturday, June 3, the fastest recorded time around the circuit will win a trophy presented by a look-alike Formula One racing driver.

The summer programme continues with a Father's Day celebration in the Cornmill Shopping Centre on Saturday, June 16.

Football legends Bernie Slaven, Eric Gates and Malcolm MacDonald will host the event, with one lucky person being given the chance to win £10,000 in cash or a Peugeot 307.

Darlington By The Sea will be held on Friday July 27, and it will see the Market Square being transformed into a beach for the day.

The Orange Darlington Festival will be held over the August bank holiday.

Council officers are in consultation with market traders and local businesses regarding the venues for the festival, which will include the Market Square, High Row, Skinnergate and Northgate.

The weekend of events will include street theatre, buskers, pavement artists, music and dance, food and sculpture.

The summer programme ends with a week of events, starting on September 10, celebrating the Rhythm 'n' Brews Festival.
