A NEW phase of development at a Teesside nature reserve was unveiled yesterday by primary school youngsters.
The pupils from Tilery School, Stockton, were at Portrack Marsh to unveil two interpretation boards.
The school has been involved from the start of the project, which is restoring a former wetland site that was destroyed 170 years ago, when the course of the River Tees was altered.
The children have already helped plant several hundred trees and shrubs on the reserve this winter, and yesterday they planted more than 200 reeds to further encourage wildlife to return.
The nature reserve has significantly developed over the past two years, with the creation of wildfowl scrapes, footpaths, wildflower areas and a bird hide.
The project has been coordinated by Tees Valley Wildlife Trust with major funding from Northumbrian Water Environmental Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Other funding has been secured from Northumbrian Water, Stockton Borough Council and the Environment Agency
