A CAMPAIGN to preserve a theatre was launched at the weekend, with the backing of The Northern Echo.

The drive to raise £1m to carry out extensive restoration work on the Georgian Theatre, in Richmond, North Yorkshire, was put into gear with the help of a Vauxhall Corsa, donated by Sherwoods of Darlington, which will be the main prize in a fundraising draw.

The campaign could ensure the future of the theatre, which is the only one of its kind in the country still in its original form, but organisers are banking on the support of the public and theatre lovers to help raise the cash.

Almost £700,000 has already been raised, through a Heritage Lottery Grant and a private donation, with the appeal aiming to raise the remaining £375,000.

The funding will enable essential restoration work to be carried out, including improved lighting, disabled access, and improvements to the auditorium.

Eric Caygill, a promoter at the theatre, said yesterday that the fundraising challenge would need as much public support as possible, if it was to succeed.

He said: "The response so far has been terrific, with backing from The Northern Echo which will help us reach a wider audience, the fabulous raffle prize from Sherwoods, and a painting donated by Mackenzie Thorpe, which will all help to attract support."

If the appeal reaches its target by the end of the year, work is expected to start early next year, and should be completed in time for the start of the 2003 season.
