LAW experts are examining the possibility of developing a community-based advisory service in the region.
The legal services commission in Newcastle is looking to set up the community legal service in County Durham.
Dean Grindle, regional planning and partnership consultant with the legal services commission said: "We are looking to work with other funders and providers of advice in County Durham to improve legal services, especially in rural areas like Wear Valley and Teesdale. People who have problems with employment, housing, welfare benefits, debt and so on, will be able to talk to a local advisor, enabling them to have their problems solved in a much quicker time.
"General research suggests that there are lots of people who need help, but they don't come forward because of the shortage of local advisors and, in some cases, because of their shame."
