GARDENERS have been putting the finishing touches to Darlington Borough Council's display for this year's Chelsea Flower Show.

Sponsored this year by Whessoe International Skanska, the display was carefully parcelled up yesterday, ready for the long journey to this year's show.

A team of six gardeners have worked almost non-stop on the display, which features South Park past and present.

It includes a 16ft model of the Victorian clock tower in the park. The model has been created by council joiner Mike Pearson.

Once the exhibit reaches Chelsea, work will begin on making sure the plants are in perfect condition for the event.

Talking about the work, the Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Dorothy Long said: "The hard work that goes on behind the scenes at Chelsea, and the immense amount of preparation that goes on beforehand, is incredible. The whole team, as well as the gardeners, should be proud of their achievement."

The Chelsea Flower Show is on next week, from Tuesday, May 22, to Friday, May 25.
