SELECTED footpaths in an area free from foot-and-mouth are to reopen.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council announced yesterday that the footpaths and woodland walks would be back in business after a series of risk assessments and advice from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Maff).

It represents the first lessening of restrictions imposed at the start of the crisis.

The east Cleveland borough has remained free from the disease but decided against reopening paths earlier after the disease was reported at Stockton, Teesside, and Whitby, North Yorkshire.

Twenty urban paths and 11 routes, which are either over or next to cropped or ploughed land, are to be reopened following checks by the council in conjunction with the Forestry Commission and the North York Moors National Park.

A list of the paths can be found on the council's website - www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk
