A REGENERATION action plan to breath new life into Weardale has been completed.
The results of the eight-month study into some of the economic and social problems facing communities in upper Weardale went before residents yesterday, at a meeting at St John's Chapel Town Hall.
The study found there were not enough opportunities and facilities in the area, especially for young people, and sports and recreation facilities were badly lacking.
The appraisal has come up with an 11-point action for the whole of Weardale with suggestions including developing a local training and business development centre, and creating a community-run leisure facility.
The appraisal, by Durham Rural Community Council should help the area secure European funding.
In the meantime, the appraisal's steering group is considering starting a community partnership to carry out the suggestions.
Jill Essam, who helped put together the community council's appraisal, has carried out similar studies elsewhere in County Durham, but said clear support for the farming industry in Weardale was a priority.
The meeting gave residents an opportunity to put forward their own ideas.
