STAFF at a North-East community centre are celebrating after winning a competition.
Trimdon Grange Community Centre has been placed first in Durham County Federation of Community Organisations' Centre of the Year contest.
The centre was almost derelict before the management committee raised £40,000 to refurbish the building, and £18,000 for a millennium garden for the community to use.
The award is based on a points system, and includes everything from community involvement to the running of the building.
The centre, which last won the award in the 1970s, hosts three computer classes, a youth club, knit and chat club, quilting class and bingo.
There is also tae kwon do, kick boxing, a parent-and-toddler class and regular bookings.
New members on the management committee are always welcome.
Anyone interested can attend the next committee meeting on Wednesday, May 30, at 3.30pm.
