AN east Durham town's anniversary twinning visit is to go ahead despite earlier fears that it might have to be scrapped because of foot-and-mouth.

This week, Peterlee Town Council confirmed the visit in July by guests from Peterlee's German twin town of Nordenham would happen.

A group of 52 visitors from Nordenham will arrive on July 25 to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the towns' twinning, on August 2.

A second group from Nordenham will arrive on July 27.

Travelling with the main party will be a folk dancing group of young people, aged between 15 and 18. Host accommodation is still required for the teenagers.

It is planned to stage a celebratory day in Peterlee Town Centre on Saturday, July 28.

The town council is inviting local performers to take part in the event.

Anyone wishing to do so should call 0191-586 4450.
