PETER REID'S hopes of securing the services of giant Czech striker Jan Koller are receeding after he admitted a move to Borussia Dortmund was an appealing proposition.

Koller is for sale and valued at around £8m by Anderlecht, and Sunderland and Fulham have been leading the chase for the tall front-man.

But now he admits: ''Although I always said I would be interested in coming to England I now have some doubts.

''It looks as though Dortmund will play in the Champions League next season and that makes them more interesting to me.''

Reid, meanwhile, has picked out Eire international Niall Quinn's headed match-winner against Newcastle United at St James' Park as his 'goal of the season'.

But Wearside fans will get the chance to cast their own vote on the club's website this week. Quinn thrilled red-and-white fans back in November when he beat Shay Given with a perfectly-judged header to ensure a second consecutive Premiership victory on Tyneside.

Reid still savours Quinn's crucial strike and remembers it as though it was yesterday.

"It was a great team move," he recalled. "Mickey Gray, who was playing as a centre-back at the time, passed it inside and Julio Arca played a great dummy to allow Alex Rae to pick out Mick's run.

"His cross was inch-perfect and Quinny did the rest - a great goal."

But there are several other candidates for 'goal of the season', including Quinn's international teammate Kevin Kilbane, who put Sunderland en-route to a crucial home victory against Charlton with a brilliant shot with the outside of his left foot.

The Irish winger also won the game for Sunderland at Southampton with a breath-taking overhead kick from the edge of the box, insisting that it wasn't a fluke.

England striker Kevin Phillips might not have been as prolific this season as last, when he won the European and Premiership Golden Boot awards for his 30 Premiership goals, but he has contributed some cracking strikes.

The website suggests that three of Phillips' 16 goals this season could come into contention for the best, starting with his strike from well outside the box at Liverpool in September, which earned a hard-fought point at Anfield.

One of his three at Bradford on Boxing Day, when he rifled a shot into the corner of the net, and his shot-on-the-turn in the FA Cup replay victory at Crystal Palace, are also also contenders.

However, it will be the fans who decide - and votes can be cast on the club website: www.sunderland-afc.com.
