Cabinet bruiser John Prescott could be charged for punching an egg-throwing countryside protester.

Police said they would be interviewing the Deputy Prime Minister about his street brawl with Craig Evans in Rhyl, North Wales.

Mr Prescott, 62, lashed out at the 29-year-old farm worker after he threw an egg in his face at point-blank range.

Gareth Watson, of North Wales Police, said: "We will definitely have to interview Mr Prescott with regard to the events of last night in Rhyl.

"We will have to speak to him to decide the course of events.

"If a complaint is made against the Deputy Prime Minister, then we will have to investigate that complaint thoroughly.

"It is possible that Mr Prescott could face charges."

The larger-than-life politician could also face a private prosecution over the punch-up.

Friends of Evans said they were taking legal advice on a private prosecution for assault.

But the Prime Minister today told Mr Prescott - I'm backing you all the way.

Tony Blair said: "John felt a blow on the side of his head and he reacted instinctively."

He said he'd worked with Mr Prescott for seven years and could not wish for a deputy who was "more true, more loyal or more decent".

Mr Blair stressed: "He cares about his country. He cares passionately about politics.

"John is John, but I tell you I am very lucky to have him as a deputy."

Many voters also supported Mr Prescott.

Most online and TV polls showed a majority backing the burly Hull East MP.

Tory leader William Hague said Mr Prescott should have kept his cool.

Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy said he didn't think the Labour heavyweight should quit.

Mr Prescott hit out after being pelted with eggs before a Labour Party rally in Rhyl.

He punched Evans on the chin after an egg was hurled into his face at point blank range.

Evans rammed a hand in Mr Prescott's face, grabbed his lapels, and pushed him against a wall as police battled to seize him.

Mr Prescott said the confrontation was "frightening and regrettable".

Evans, from Denbigh, North Wales, was arrested on suspicion of assault and released on police bail pending further inquiries.
