SHOPPERS can now pick up information about cancer as well as their weekly shopping.

The Cancer Research Campaign has joined forces with Asda to pilot its touch screen information service in two stores - one in Tyne and Wear and the other in the Midlands.

Newcastle Falcons star Gary Armstrong was one of the first to use the innovative service at the Asda store in Boldon Colliery, South Tyneside.

Customers can find out about cancer symptoms, treatment and risk factors by simply touching a computer screen.

The screens also give details about Men's Cancer Awareness Month, in June, and how people can help the charity beat the disease.

Professor Gordon McVie, the charity's director general, said: "This is the first time shoppers are to be given the chance to pick up vital cancer information as easily as a tin of beans off the supermarket shelf."

Mr Armstrong said: "It is important that people can access information on cancer easily and in surroundings they feel comfortable with.

"I am pleased to be able to support The Cancer Research Campaign and I'm sure lots of people will make great use of this touchscreen service."
