York and District Senior League - DUNNINGTON confirmed their early season ranking as Premier Division favourites by moving top after convincingly beating third-placed Osbaldwick by seven wickets.

Collis King again ruled the roost as Dunnington blew away Osbaldwick. King took three for 20 as he teamed up with Steve Precious (4-22) to bowl out Osbaldwick for 131. Steve Jackson and Dave Cooper each made 33 for Osbaldwick but King struck an unbeaten 40 as he and his fellow countryman Alvin Kallicharran ensured that Dunnington were victorious. Killcharran rattled 12 fours in 68, reaching his half century in 65 minutes off 70 balls, sharing a third wicket stand of 107.

Previous leaders Clifton Alliance made 256 against Woodhouse Grange but had to be satisfied with a draw when their opponents closed on 213 for seven while champions Easingwold just failed to notch their first win of the season when their innings ended with their total level with strong rivals Thirsk leaving the game tied.

Ripon's long-serving bowler Paul Mason showed that he is still capable of turning in match-winning performances in the higher echelons when he took eight for 48 in 24 overs to set up his side's first win since returning to the Premier Division, at the expense of Whitkirk.

Pickering gained full battling points at Acomb but still suffered a six-wicket defeat which has left them at the foot of the division. Brian Leckenby top scored for the Pikes with 77 while Chris Nicholls with 38 and Andy Hill, who made 37 no, contributed to the visitors' total of 212 for five. Sri Lankan Duminda Pereera revelled in the sunshine as he rattled his first league century. Andy Tute made an extremely useful 56 and Pereera remained unbeaten on 101 when Dave Sykes' side gained their first victory of the season.

Two teams who enjoy a strong but healthy rivalry met at Easingwold where visiting Thirsk were obliged to take first innings. Aussie Lincoln McCrae started the ball rolling with 30 then Neil Stephenson made 34. Ex-Bilton-in-Ainsty player Mike Gear followed with 38 but Des Wyrill top scored with 39 to boost Thirsk's total to 174 for six.

Easingwold skipper Jonathan Marwood made 32. Overseas player Damon Smith chipped in with 29 but Barry Petty turned in one of his customary long lean spells. Paul Skilbeck kept home hopes alive with 44 and Paul Redshaw made an unbeaten 25no before the game ended with honours virtually even as Easingwold closed at 174 for eight with the scores level. Petty added 3 for 70 to his seasonal bag while Dave Greenlay took three for 85 as his side gained 19 points to Easingwold's 18 in a tied match.

Batting first, when entertaining Ripon, Whitkirk made a disastrous start as Paul Mason made serious inroads into their battling line up. The hosts slipped to 45 for five before number seven batsman Nick Edgecock found a productive partner in Gary Thorpe who made 27 from the number eight berth.

Mason produced a vintage spell of bowling which saw him grab eight for 48 in 24 overs and Whitkirk's final total of 137 all out owed much to Edgecock who remained unbeaten with 51.

Ripon's early batting was little better than their opponents as they lost five for 59 and a sixth at 74. However, their saving grace was the tenacity of opener Richard Hawley who battled on amidst the mayhem to eventually produce a match-winning unbeaten knock of 59. Home skipper Craig Shipton took three for 32 but Ripn were able to gain their first win at 137 for seven.

Scarborough lead division two by 16 points after gaining the better of a draw against Rowntrees at Mille Crux. Ex-Hornsea player Andrew Clappison was the first to fall when the seasiders took first knock, being bowled by Paul Horner for 20 at 32. Fellow opener Chris Batchelor moved to his half century off 70 balls but saw three partners fall to the spin of Richard Tuite (3-46). Greg Chadwick was bowled by Tuite for 13 and was followed by Andy Welford who fell in the same manner after hitting 20 off just 13 balls. Skipper Mark Welford became the bowlers third victim when he was caught for 31 by Nick Sedgwick. Meanwhile Batchelor was making serene progress and had reached 90no off 128 balls when his side's innings closed on 195 for five. The opener hit nine boundaries in his 45 over stay at the crease. Rowntrees opener Gerry Capelin made 43 before becoming the first of three home batsmen to be dismissed on 77 as Rowntrees slumped to 77 for five. Skipper Sean Marshall then made 35 off 54 balls as he and Tony Thomson who dug in for 37 balls eased their side towards a draw. Both fell to Rob Harrison in his return of four for 66 but they had staved off defeat and the factory side gained a fairly comfortable draw at 147 for eight.

Tim Little, Huby's recent recruit from New Earswick, captured seven for 23 against Dunnington II as a prelude to his side's six-wicket victory which helped them open a ten point lead in Division Four.

Two team captains hit their maiden league centuries when Sheriff Hutton Bridge's Craig Hunte made 108 in his side's advantage draw over Dringhouses in Division Four while Stefan Cockerill's unbeaten 109 enabled Rowntrees to earn a similar result at Wilberfoss in Division Five. Other century makers were Robert Nicholls (102 no) for Dringhouses in the Sheriff Hutton Bridge game and John White whose 114 helped Bolton Percty bank the full 30 points at the expense of Civil Service in Division Five.

l An Easingwold second team player became the second player to score a half century and take nine wickets in a game, a feat previously only recorded by Cawood's Karl Scott last season. Leckenby made 53 as Easingwold gained maximum batting points, then claimed nine for 36 to wipe out Thirsk for 79 and put himself firmly in pole position for the first of the season's monthly bowling awards.

l The York and District Senior League's Under-21 team in the White Rose Trophy beat the Wetherby League while the Under-17 team had a thrilling victory over the strong North Yorkshire Cricket Association side.

In the White Rose Trophy game, played at the impressive New Rover ground, York skipper Tom Glover of Whitkirk won the toss and elected to bat. Initially, it seemed to be a flawed decision as the two Wetherby opening bowlers Childe and Ward imposed a vice-like grip on the batsmen by conceding only 13 runs in the first 12 overs.

With York's Ian Calpin being bowled by Childe for five and Whitkirk's Grant Galloway hitting a return catch to Ward after making only a single, the York League side were in difficulty when Glover joined Selby's Steve Spence at 13-2.

Glover, who won the best young player award for both the York Senior League and the Leeds are Joe Lumb last season, immediately made his presence felt when he cracked the first two boundaries of the innings off Russell who replaced Childe. York worked themselves into a strong position with a third-wicket partnership of 99, Spence caught for 63.

Glover and fellow Whitkirk teammate Phil Scoular added 51 before Glover was fourth out, bowled by Ward for 54.

Childe, on his return to the attack, accounted for Scoular who had made 43, but the fourth Whitkirk member of the team, Matthew Wright, hit his first two balls for a six and a four and, with York's Chris Cole making 23 not out, a total of 222 for seven was posted in the 50 overs.

The two Wetherby opening batsmen also found runs hard to make against the bowling of Tom Barton (Sessay) and Matthew Coulson (Stillington) and were only able to score at two an over in the first ten overs, both batsmen then falling in single figures as Coulson bagged a clean bowled and a caught behind by Scoular. With Glover and Cole also bowling tight spells, Wetherby's run rate was always lacking and their ten man side was eventually dismissed for 139 with Coulson claiming two for 23 and Glover two for 27.

York Senior League won by 83 runs

l The league's Joe Lumb team were in competitive action for the first time when they entertained the strong North Yorkshire Cricket Association at Thirsk. The NYCA battled first and made a respectable 169 for nine with R Lazenby making 57 and R Evans 45. However, the first half honours undoubtedly went to York's Tom Pringle who captured seven wickets for 69.

When York batted, Clifton Alliance youngster Nathan Briggs made 45 then Matthew Beckett of Stamford Bridge hit an unbeaten 49 which saw his side clinch a fine two wicket win.

North Yorkshire Cricket Association 169 for 9 (R Lazenby 57, T Pringle 7-69) lost to York and District Senior League 200-8 (N Briggs 45, M Beckett 49 no, J Hussain 3-45) by two wickets.
