SUNDERLAND Saints won their first trophy, defeating Easington Police 1-0 in the league cup final.

But Saints hope it's the first of three in a highly successful season. They have finished top of Division Two and only the management committee overturning a previous decision against Durham Fire Brigade will prevent them from becoming champions.

In the final, Saints came out of the traps with all guns blazing and could have been ahead in the opening minutes when Ian Stephen dragged his shot wide after being put clean through.

Two further chances went wide before Saints scored after ten minutes. A partially cleared free-kick was knocked back in and Stephen scored with an overhead kick. This brought Easington to life and they came close to an equaliser when Brad Howe's shot came back off the keeper. For Saints, Andy Roper beat the keeper to a long punt but having been forced wide, couldn't pick out a team mate to score.

The second-half was even with few chances for either side. Easington pressed hard but were unable to equalise and saw the trophy they'd won last year slip away. In the end, one goal was enough for the joyful Saints.
