ORGANISERS have confirmed no one will be going to a Scarborough fair this summer.
The risk of spreading foot-and-mouth disease has prompted cancellation of the Seamer Fair, held near the North Yorkshire resort every July.
The event is popular with the gipsy community from across the north. It is hoped an early announcement will help ensure no one makes the trip unnecessarily.
Councillor Mark Evans, said: "The decision to cancel was taken very reluctantly, but based on sound advice.
"Plans for providing dedicated accommodation for visitors should not be made in light of concerns over foot-and-mouth; in any case, the county council will put in place its usual closure of Long Lane and Crab Lane, to prevent any casual overnight parking."
The June horse fair at Appleby, in Cumbria, has also been cancelled.
