APPLETON Wiske reached the third round of the Wadworth 6X National Village Cricket Championship with a 38-run win over Skelton Castle on Sunday.

Appleton, who had to switch the second round match to Skelton because their own ground is in a foot-and-mouth infected area, won the toss and batted.

Openers Danny Murdoch and Chris Marshall put on 68 before Marshall was bowled for 22. Murdoch was then joined by Matty Dex and the pair enjoyed a second-wicket partnership of 123. Murdoch was eventually stumped for 87, but Dex remained unbeaten on 76 as Appleton reached 203-3 in their 40 overs.

A tight bowling display then kept the pressure on Skelton right through their innings, restricting them to 165-7. The pick of the bowlers was paceman Paul Conner, who picked up 3-27 runs in nine overs.
