A ROW over spending plans for Middlesbrough's town hall are under fire from some councillors .

Councillor Tom Mawston, leader of the opposition group of Liberal Democrats on Middlesbrough council, said yesterday: "If money is going to be spent on the town hall it should be concentrated on the public amenities contained in the complex.

"The Crypt - once popular as a concert venue - should be considered, or the main town hall itself. Investing in these facilities will generate income for the council as well."

He said the spending of £264,434 on a revamp of the mayor's parlour and its surroundings "was hugely unpopular in a recent survey - only 11 per cent of residents being in favour".

The seasoned councillor said he was concerned at plans to spend £16m on restoration and refurbishment of the town hall, during the next four years.

Referring to the timing of the spending plans and the takeover of much of the day-to-day running of the council by the private sector company, Hyder, Coun Mawston said: "We would also like to see a more thorough assessment of the office accommodation required by the council.

"Shortly, large numbers of staff will be transferring to Hyder Business Services. We need to have a clear idea of how much office space we will need before spending millions of pounds on these plans.''

Coun Ken Walker, leader of the council, said it was money being wisely spent.

The spending plans are also supported by the Conservative opposition group on the council.
