HEAVENLY performers will help mark a milestone in an ancient building's history.

Middlesbrough-born singer Suzannah Clarke and harpist Kate Wilson, who call themselves the Angels of the North, will present a concert of jazz, songs from the shows and light classics at Sir William Turner's Hospital, Kirkleatham, on June 15.

It has been organised to celebrate the 325th anniversary of the completion of the original Almshouses, on the same date in 1676.

In response to the huge demand for tickets, the Chapel Gallery will be opened to provide extra capacity.

Allan Wordsworth, clerk to the trustees, said: "With only 100 or so guests, the atmosphere will be very intimate. No one will be more than ten or 12 yards from the artists, in contrast with concerts in vast open air arenas."

South Bank Brass Band will play in the courtyard to welcome early arrivals, and guests are welcome to picnic in the grounds prior to the concert.

Tickets, priced £18.50 and £12.50, are available from Sotheran's stationery shop, in Redcar, on (01642) 490401.
