TWO ram-raiders escaped empty-handed after a failed attempt to break into a mini-bank in a Hartlepool shop.

Police were alerted to the attack at 1.55am yesterday, when two alarms in the Day and Night store in Wynyard Road were activated.

A stolen car was used to try to break into the mini bank at the shop, but when the attack failed, the youths ran off.

One was ran along Wynyard Road while the other made off towards Greenock Road.

Detective Sergeant Tony Green. of Hartlepool police, said: "The re-emergence of this offence after a number of years is a cause for concern.

"The law was altered to reflect the seriousness of the offence and offenders are seriously punished to reflect this.

"We will do our best to bring these people to justice and as always the public has a major role to play."
