TWO burglars preyed on a widow after pretending they needed a plaster.

Police have issued an e-fit of one of two men who called at the home of an 88-year-old woman in Spennymoor on Monday evening and stole her pension books and cash.

One of the thieves told the elderly occupant he needed a plaster because he had cut his finger.

The woman allowed both men into her bungalow on the Tudhoe Moor estate.

While she looked for a plaster, the second man searched other rooms and stole her purse and pension book.

Detective Constable Neil Hobson, of Newton Aycliffe police, said: "This elderly lady has been left badly shaken by this incident.

"I would appeal to anyone who thinks they may have seen these men in the area to get in touch with the police.

"Elderly people in particular need to be on their guard against distraction burglars and should not let anyone in their homes unless they are shown proper identification. The message is - if in doubt, don't let them in and notify the police."

The man who asked for the plaster is described as bald, with a double chin, ruddy complexion and very, heavy build. He was aged in his early twenties and about 5ft 4in.

The second man was also in his twenties, about 5ft 5in to 5ft 8in, slim and had mousy hair. Both spoke with a North-East accent.

Anyone with information should call Newton Aycliffe police on (01325) 314401.
