MOTORISTS are being advised to find alternative routes following the start of road maintenance work in Monkwearmouth.
The roadworks started in Church Street North yesterday, and include the reconstruction of footpaths and carriageway strengthening.
The work is scheduled to last ten weeks, but highway chiefs are hoping it will be completed sooner.
Highways maintenance manager Graham Carr said he apologised to motorists in advance for any inconvenience caused.
