THE memory of the men who immortalised the name of Jarrow was marked by one of the richest people in Britain yesterday.

Chairman of the Morrison stores group Sir Kenneth Morrison CBE was in town to open a new Morrisons store employing 350 people.

And he also unveiled a plinth marking the spot where a traditional bronze sculpture celebrating the 1936 Jarrow marchers will be erected on October 5 - the 65th anniversary of the march.

Morrisons has commissioned the sculpture created by renowned sculptor Graham Ibbeson, although it is keeping the exact details of the bronze, including its price, firmly under wraps.

The Jarrow crusaders marched for jobs after the collapse of shipbuilding in the Tyneside town. Sir Kenneth's father is regularly named in the Sunday Times list of the nation's richest people.

His father, William Morrison, opened the first store, anegg and butter shop, in Bradford in 1899.

The new shop is the 111th Morrisons store.

New store manager Phil Gledhill said: "During the past weeks the team has been working night and day to ensure that customers enjoy shopping, Morrisons style, from day one."
