A NORTH-EAST firm stands to benefit from news that European plane maker Airbus Industrie has secured more than 100 new orders for civilian and military aircraft in a multi-billion pound deal.

Industry Minister Brian Wilson said the orders would create jobs throughout Britain and was "great news" for thousands of British Aerospace Systems workers.

Airbus said yesterday it had received firm orders from US-based International Lease Finance Corp for 111 planes valued at about £6.2bn. These include ten orders for its new superjumbo, the A380.

As part of the order, Airbus will deliver five A380-800 passenger planes, five A380-800F cargo planes, 21 A330 jets and 80 planes in the A320 family. The planes will be delivered between 2002 and 2009.

Aerospace Sytems and Technologies 2000, in Consett, County Durham, designs and makes wing components for Airbus planes.

Last night, a spokesman for the firm, which was rescued from receivership last December, said: "It's a bit early to say, but the orders will add to the general Airbus workload and that's probably going to be good news for us."
