A RESIDENTS association has moved a step nearer to securing a community house.

Chilton West Residents Association has identified an empty house in Coleridge Road to use as a drop-in centre.

A number of groups, including Age Concern, the Benefits Agency and voluntary organisation Cavos, have expressed an interest in using the facilities, but will only agree once the house has been secured.

There are also plans for a baby equipment swap or hire facility, information area and access to college courses.

Sedgefield Borough Council's cabinet discussed the proposals and has recommended that a peppercorn rent be charged for use of the house.

A report to the cabinet said: "Chilton West Residents Association has been established for three years and has proven to be successful. The proposal of a community house would enhance local service provision and would be consistent with the aims of the Government's Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy."

Association chairman Margaret Taylor said: "I am pleased that this is finally coming to fruition because it has been a long time in coming."

The next stage is for the residents association to get its business plan approved, which will help its case for grant applications.
