FORMER Wolves boss Colin Lee wants to be Bobby Robson's new right-hand man at Newcastle.

Lee has quit Third Division Torquay after saving the Gulls from relegation to the Conference and is eager to land a high-profile position in the top flight.

Robson was this week bitterly upset about losing head coach Mick Wadsworth, who has linked up with Stuart Gray as the new Southampton manager's No 2.

But ex-Tottenham striker Lee, also a contender for the role of first-team coach at Aston Villa following Steve Harrison's move to Middlesbrough, has made the Magpies aware of his interest in taking over from Wadsworth.

Meanwhile, a shock poll has revealed that more than 60 per cent of Newcastle United fans say Bobby Robson should go as manager.

Fans' website Talk of the Tyne asked members of the Toon Army what they thought of 68-year-old Robson.

And the figures make alarming reading for the former England boss.

Nearly 40 pc of fans polled said he should remain in charge - but the rest insist his time in the Tyneside hot-seat is up.

The survery showed that 36.7 pc feel Robson should quit, 16.7 pc want him to 'move upstairs' to a general managerial role, and 6.7 pc say he should be sacked.

Robson last season railed against a section of fans who singled out Mick Wadsworth for criticism, and went on the offensive again this week when his head coach stunned United by quitting to become No 2 to Southampton's Stuart Gray.

The Saints' new boss was accused by Robson of poaching the unhappy Wadsworth.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have issued another hands-off warning over Kieron Dyer following reports of a projected £20m bid by Leeds, while newly-promoted Fulham have been told to forget about any approach for defender Aaron Hughes.
