THE Labour Party is on the move - literally - and it is heading our way.

It is is relinquishing its prestigious headquarters at Millbank overlooking the Thames in London for offices in Bedford Road, North Shields.

About 150 jobs are likely to be transferred to the new National Support Centre.

It is expected that the press, policy and the general secretary's office will remain in the capital but other functions, such as distribution and printing, election staff, local government and conference organisation, will move.

Vacated will be two massive floors of offices, totalling 25,000 sq ft at a rental cost of £586,600, and a 240-seat tiered auditorium.

Hundreds of thousands of pounds have also been spent at Millbank on fixtures, including phones, faxes and personal computer workstations. It was described as "the most potent and visible manifestation yet of New Labour".

Labour General Secretary Margaret McDonagh told London staff that rent at Millbank, which overlooks the River Thames, was likely to triple to nearly £1m.

Eddie Darke, deputy leader of North Tyneside Council, said: "It is pretty good news for the North-East, and I only hope that the Government follows suit and moves some of its departments to the region."

The GMB union, which represents staff at Millbank, says it will be holding urgent talks with party bosses to ensure favourable redundancy terms for members unable to relocate.

A national official said: "Workers have given loyal service to the Labour Party over many years throughout some of the party's most traumatic times. We expect them to be treated properly now."

A final decision on the move will be made by August.
