POLICE are targeting litter bugs in an attempt to clean up the streets.

Northumbria Police are supporting Sunderland City's Just Bin It campaign, and those caught dumping their litter could face a fine of up to £2,500.

Chief Inspector Michael Hartnack said: "We are keen to take part in this campaign, which aims to improve the environment by literally cleaning up the borough.

"Northumbria Police will play an important role in enforcing the law, which we believe will deter others from inconsiderate acts of dropping litter, causing graffiti and other acts of criminal damage.

"Officers from Sunderland and Washington are taking part in this initiative, and we hope that by the end of July the full impact will be seen across the city in a cleaner and much improved environment."

Police have been visiting schools to let youngsters know how they can help.

They have also been targeting parks and other public areas which have had problems with rubbish.

During the summer, officers will clamp down on youth disorder and under-age drinking in public places.

Chief Insp Hartnack said: "Sunderland is a great city and we aim to help it look its best, particularly during the summer when we attract a great many visitors.

"We hope this campaign will help to instil civic pride and make the city a safer and more enjoyable place to live, work and visit."

The campaign will run from Monday to Sunday, July 22.
